A new Comprehensive Equity Plan (CEP) for 2007-2010 is now under development by the Montclair Public Schools’ Affirmative Action Team. Following the presentation several weeks ago to the Board of Education on the annual Affirmative Action Report, two CEP review meetings have been scheduled. The first will take place on Friday, March 16 at 5:00 p.m. and the second on Saturday, March 17 at noon. Both meetings will be held at the Board of Education building, 22 Valley Road.
The Comprehensive Equity Plan is prepared every three years by an Affirmative Action Team comprised of school staff and stakeholders under the direction of the District’s Affirmative Action Officer. The CEP addresses issues including: equality and equity in school and classroom practices; equal access for students to all programs, activities and facilities; prohibition of harassment; equality in employment and contract practices; provision of professional development for staff to ensure compliance with state equity codes; and the appointment of an Affirmative Action Officer on staff.
In developing the CEP, the District’s Affirmative Action Officer will oversee the collection of student and staff data, the implementation of the CEP and the preparation of an annual progress report in the Quality Assurance Annual Report. This progress report is presented to the Board of Education on a yearly basis.
On February 22, a letter was sent to School Review Chairpersons and PTA Presidents and Co-Presidents by Bruce Dabney, Assistant-to-the-Superintendent, announcing the first CEP review meeting on March 6, 2007. The letter invited Affirmative Action Team members including representatives from each school, as well as parents and members of the community, to participate in the process of renewing the plan for 2007-2010.
