Montclair Teams Enjoy Successful Season

On Sat., Dec. 4, the Montclair High School football team (7-4) lost to Randolph 19-0 in the New Meadowlands Stadium North 1, Group 4 state championship title game. Led by first-year coach John Fiore, the team made its 15th finals appearance. The Mounties will be honored for their accomplishments this year by the Montclair Board of Education at the Dec. 20 meeting.

The MHS Field Hockey team was recognized at the Dec. 6 Board of Education meeting for their successful season. The team finished with an 18-5-1 record and won the Essex County Championship and the NJSIAA, Section 1, Group 4 Championship. At the end of the season, the team was ranked 4th in the state.

Leading the team was head coach Mary Pat Mercuro named State Coach of the Year by The Star-Ledger.

Additionally, five field hockey players were named Academic All-Americans by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association: Dakota Sikes-Keilp; Tess Rizzuto; Olivia Melendez; Silvana Martinez; and Brittany McManamey.

Following is a round-up of the rest of the fall sports teams:

Boys Soccer (Coach Jack Weber) – Finished with a record of 8-9-2 in the highly competitive American Division of the Super Essex Conference. The team beat Columbia in the regular season. Columbia finished in the top 20 teams in The Star-Ledger poll. The team also qualified for state tournament play and defeated the Number 2 seed North Bergen in a team shoot out.

Girls Soccer (Coach Chris Johnson) – Finished with a record of 14-6. The Girls Team lost in the county finals to Livingston by a score of 2-1. They also qualified for state tournament play and lost to Clifton 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Girls Volleyball (Coach Major Jennings) – Finished with a record of 7-14-1. They played in the Essex County Volleyball Tournament, making it to the second round.

Boys Cross Country (Coach Ray Spivey) – Finished with a record of 4-4 and competed in league, county and sectional championship meets.

Girls Cross Country (Coach Keshia Golding) – Finished with a record of 0-7, in the sectional championship meet they finished in 5th place and in the county championships they finished in 8th place.

Gymnastics – (Coach Jamie Graham) Two girls qualified for state tournaments.
