At the heart of the Renaissance School are students and faculty who investigate ideas through an interdisciplinary thematic curriculum. The thematic approach centers on essential questions that provide the discipline to exceed state and school district standards.

Structure is based on commitment to maximum use of instructional time. The school implements an extended day schedule incorporating on-going collaborative seminars with cross-disciplined reading work.

The school makes full use of community resources including classes at the Montclair Art Museum and access to the Montclair Public Library. We use specialized instructors from other schools in the district.

In keeping with the philosophy of the classroom with few walls, the thematic units include field study and investigation. These sites vary from visits to museums and outdoor ecological and historical sites.

Inside Montclair's newest magnet school, you will find a Mac computer lab and two carts of Macbook computers for student and staff use in school and on field trips.  Thanks to our generous and supportive PTA and the MFEE, each classroom now has an interactive projector (complete with wand) and a document camera to bring the lessons to life!  Please come and visit us and see for yourself.

Our Position on
Tardiness

Middle school is a big step for students toward the adult world.  We want everything we do to lead students ntoward sound judgment, responsible choices, and greater independence. We take seriously our responsibility to develop positive habits in students that will benefit them in higher education and eventually in the workplace. One such habit is arriving where you need to be on time. We value on-time arrival for school each day.

Brain research confirms that stress actually prevents learning since stress triggers the release of cortisol, which blocks the intake of new knowledge. Students who arrive late for school are frequently stressed and not available to learn for a period of time.  Because we take our obligation to teach with the utmost seriousness, we want students to be available to learn at all times.

School – and learning – begins at 8:20 each day.

Thank you to all of the students who arrive ready to learn by 8:20 and to the families who support the development of this positive habit.
