Nishuane Students Hear from African Storytellers

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Students at Nishuane watch and listen as an African-American man and woman tell stories from Africa.

In honor of Black History Month, Nishuane held a school-wide African Folktales Assembly on Feb. 1. Students were treated to a performance by Bright Star Theatre Group. Two talented African griots (storytellers), Akili and Jabari, shared stories that celebrate the vastness of the African landscape. As students entered the performance space, the sounds of African instruments and a bustling “market” filled the air. Audience interaction was encouraged as the skilled performers brought to life Anansi, pourquoi and trickster tales. The assembly included sing-alongs, stories and humor to help celebrate world cultures, language and oral traditions.

More on Nishuane’s and the district’s Black History Month activities.
