Northeast Elementary School students demonstrated their “maptidude” at the 16th annual Geography Bee on Saturday, Feb. 10. More than 160 students participated in the PTA-sponsored event, which celebrates the school’s global studies magnet theme. Families, friends and teacher volunteers cheered on teams of students as they fielded a wide variety of geography questions about state capitals, land formations and countries around the world.

The winning K-2 team — the Geo Jaguars (Sophie Knutzen, Anastasia Zarenin and Lara Anthony) — will enjoy a special lunch with Northeast Principal Dr. Gail Clarke. The 3-5 winners — the Geolalists (Femi Anthony, Vihaan Jetley and Nick Chiaravalloti) ——will take an exciting trip to the maps division at The New York Public Library.

“The Geography Bee is such a special event for the Northeast community,” said PTA Co-President Sara Ferry. “The kids learn so much, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see all their effort, team work and school spirit on display."

In addition to Ferry, Northeast parents Amruta Karmarkar, Lili and Matt Knutzen and Matt Ericson organized the event.

Well-wishers cheer on the participants.
