Jessica de Koninck brings to the Board of Education three decades of engagement in public education law and policy. She served as In-House Counsel for both the South Orange-Maplewood School District, the position from which she retired from public employment in 2013, and the Trenton School District. Previously, she was the Director of Legislative Services for the New Jersey Department of Education where she worked with local and federal legislators and stakeholder groups on proposed laws and regulations.
A magna cum laude graduate of Brandeis University, de Koninck earned her law degree from Boston University School of Law. She has also served as a Fellow at the John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy at Thomas Edison State College where she worked on projects involving urban education policy.
In addition to her legal career, de Koninck is a poet whose work has appeared in Poetry Magazine, The Ledge, and her collection Repairs, among numerous other journals and anthologies.
Active in the community almost since moving to Montclair in 1984, de Koninck twice served on the Montclair Township Council as representative for the Second Ward and has served on both the Environment Advisory Committee and the Library Board. Additionally, she participated in the Conversations on Race program for more than a decade.
Her two children began Pre-K at Nishuane, attended Hillside and Glenfield and graduated from Montclair High School. She believes that rigorous, high quality public education, delivered in a caring and nurturing environment that meets the needs of every student, is the single most important service government provides.
