Substituting

Permanent Montclair residents ONLY, can pick up a Substitute packet to apply for a Substitute certificate beginning the third Tuesday in September through the end of May, on Tuesdays between 10 am-12 noon or Thursdays between 2-4 pm beginning third week in September through May 31st.  (We do not process Substitutes during Spring break or during the Summer).  Applications for Substitute certificates are processed for Montclair residents only.   

All others should follow the instructions below when they have secured a Substitute or state certification.  Substitute certificates, no matter the district of origin, are recognized by all districts in the State of New Jersey. Just present it together with the other documentation noted below.

If you already have a teaching certification, then please provide the documentation listed below.  You should bring these documents on Tuesdays between 10 am-12 noon or Thursdays between 2-4 pm, the beginning third week in September through May 31st.  (We do not process Substitutes during Spring break or during the Summer.)

Documents:

  • your certificate;               
  • ID (valid NJ license and social security card OR valid NJ license and birth certificate OR a passport);
  • Proof of fingerprinting (MorphoTrak form w/receipt attached) and criminal history clearance letter (has state seal as a blue watermark in the center); and
  • TB test results (taken within a year).
