This Montclair-based community-wide partnership is geared to make healthy food and regular physical activity easier to access in schools, restaurants, and the community. The website contains resources for healthy eating and active living, including upcoming events, grant opportunities and websites.
Action for Healthy Kids. The only nonprofit organization formed specifically to address the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes at school. Action for Healthy Kids works in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to improve children's nutrition and increase physical activity, which will in turn improve their readiness to learn.
Go Ask Alice. This website allows the visitor to ask questions about health and wellness issues. The visitor simply sends their question via the form on the site. It is answered by the team of folks from the Columbia University Health Question and Answer Service. Answers are provided and posted in a matter of days. Visitors can read all other questions and answers in their nicely present archive section. Topics represented in the archive section are sexuality, relationships, drugs and alcohol, fitness and nutrition, and emotional well- being. The Produce for Better Health Foundation has been on a mission for the last decade — to improve the nation’s health. Their goal is to educate Americans, promote produce, and increase consumption levels of fruits and vegetables. It’s all about color — and the power of colorful fruits and vegetables to promote good health and boost produce sales.
The website of the American Dietetic Association provides nutrition information for health as well as for management of medical problems. For individuals who would like to find a nutrition specialist, names of dietitians can be identified. It is best to contact 2-3 and speak with them to be sure that their approach to food and yours are compatible and that the fee is acceptable to you.
The Discovery Health Channel website. Topics include behavior, development, family matters, first aid, fitness, health, infants, infections and nutrition.
Website for kids by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Uses games to teach middle-school-aged children (and their parents and teachers) how the food environment (advertising, portion sizes, school vending choices) influences their food choices and how to eat well. Kids can see how their favorite restaurant foods stack up; play “true or false” with a food industry spokesman and “bite back” by asking food companies and government officials to support healthy eating.
