AP Studio Art

Level: Academic

Credits: 5 Visual/Performing Arts

Course Description: Advanced Placement Studio Art is a rigorous college level studio course in which the student will prepare a highly focused and accomplished portfolio of work that will be submitted to the College Board in May. This portfolio submission counts as the AP test for the course. Upon entering this course, students are expected to have significant skills in the areas of drawing, painting, color theory, photography, and/or sculpture. Students are strongly advised to complete summer assignments in preparation for this course. Homework will be assigned daily. Students are expected to work in the MHS art studio a minimum of two extra hours weekly. The art studio will be open until 4 pm two afternoons weekly. Students will  select one major: Drawing, 2-­‐D Design (includes photography and graphic design), or 3-­‐D Design(includessculptureandfashiondesign.)


  • Standard 1: The Creative Process – All students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles that govern the creation of works of art in dance, music, theatre, andvisualart.
  • Standard 2: History of the Arts and Culture – All students will understand the role, development, and influence of the arts throughout history and across cultures
  • Standard 3: Performing – All students will synthesize skills, media, methods, andtechnologiesthatareappropriatetocreating,performing,and/orpresentingworksofartindance,music,theatre,andvisualart.
  • Standard 4: Aesthetic Responses & Critique Methodologies – All students will demonstrate and apply an understanding of arts philosophies, judgment, and analysis to works of art in dance, music, theatre, and visual art.

 Units of Study

  • Unit I: Breadth Section of the AP Portfolio – The student will complete 12 excellent works that demonstrate the elements/principles of art and exhibit a wide variety of techniques, stylistic characteristics, media, approaches, and subject
  • Unit II: Concentration Section of the AP Portfolio – The student will complete 12 highly accomplished works that will explore and express a design theme developed in These 12 completed artworks will provide clear evidence that through their creative process, the student has engaged in a process of discovery and growth.
  • Unit III: The AP Exam – The student will complete all requirements for and submit a completed art portfolio to complete the AP Studio Art

Evaluation and Assessment

  • Projects (40%) -­‐ projects are assigned as both instructional tools and instruments for Projects are assessed on an individual basis and evaluated based on the following criteria: following instructions, skill and development, creativity and originality, craftsmanship, and completion of the project.
  • Class Work (30%) -­‐ an integral aspect of the learning process, allowing students to demonstrate their ongoing understanding of content and concepts Class work includes demonstration of a cooperative attitude and contribution to the learning process of the class, proper utilization of class time, attendance and punctuality, proper use of materials and supplies, studio set-­‐up and clean-­‐up, and participation in class discussions and critiques.
  • Tests/Quizzes (5%) -­‐ an assessment of cumulative knowledge and understanding of a unit of study/evaluation of short-­‐term knowledge and understanding of homework assignments and class
  • Homework (15%) -­‐ enables students to exercise and reinforce their knowledge and understanding of skills taught in class, as well as preparation and/or research for projects to be executed in
  • Mid-­‐Exam (5%) – a culminating assessment of skills and knowledge administered at the middle of the semester’s
