World Languages

MANDARIN 1
Students will develop basic language skills for communication and asking/responding to simple questions, as well as interpreting simple conversations and short stories. In Cycle 1, we will focus on greetings, numbers, and fruit.  In Cycle 2, we will focus on family. In Cycle 3, we will focus on colors, likes, and dislikes.

MANDARIN 2
(At least 2 cycles of Mandarin 1 are required to take Mandarin 2)
Students will develop the language skills for communication involving asking/responding to questions, participating in simple conversations, interpreting the longer sentences and stories, and writing simple sentences. Students will also explore Pinyin (the pronunciation of Chinese words) and basic character writing skills. In Cycle 1, we will focus on clothing. In Cycle 2, we will focus on body parts and senses. In Cycle 3, we will focus on expressing feelings.

MANDARIN 3
(At least 2 cycles of Mandarin 2 are required to take Mandarin 3)
Students will develop the language skills for communication involving asking/responding to complex questions, participating in conversations, interpreting complex sentences and stories, and writing longer sentences. Students will also explore Pinyin (the pronunciation of Chinese words) and basic character writing skills. In Cycle 1, we will focus on school and daily schedules. In Cycle 2, we will focus on hobbies. In Cycle 3, we will focus on food and houses.

CI MANDARIN
(At least 2 cycles of Mandarin 3 are required to take CI Mandarin)
CI Mandarin is offered only to 5th graders. Students learn new vocabulary through conversation, storytelling, and reading. The vocabulary from Mandarin 1, Mandarin 2 and Mandarin 3 is recycled through the lessons. The students will also explore typing in Chinese and looking up words in dictionary. Cycle 1 concentrates on the things in the house; cycle 2 concentrates on the places in town; and cycle 3 concentrates on traveling.

SPANISH 1
Students learn vocabulary in context through storytelling and reading. The goals are to be able to understand questions and respond, to have simple conversations, and to read simple sentences. Cycle 1 concentrates on greetings and wild animals; cycle 2 concentrates on family members and daily activities; and cycle 3 concentrates on school rooms, supplies, and activities.

SPANISH 2
(At least 2 cycles of Spanish 1 are required to take Spanish 2)
Students learn vocabulary through storytelling and reading. The vocabulary from Spanish 1 is recycled through the lessons. The goal of this class is to understand, read, and write longer sentences and stories. Cycle 1 concentrates on celebrations, the calendar, and the Spanish-speaking countries; cycle 2 concentrates on clothing; and cycle 3 concentrates on the body and personality.

CI SPANISH
(At least 2 cycles of Spanish 2 are required to take CI Spanish)
Two cycles of Spanish 2 are required to take CI Spanish, which is offered only to 5th graders and native or heritage speaking students. Three cycles of CI Spanish are required to be recommended for Advanced Spanish in 6th grade. Students learn new vocabulary through conversation, storytelling, and reading. The vocabulary from Spanish 1 and 2 is recycled through the lessons. The goal for this class is to understand, read, and write complex sentences; and to be able to produce original stories. Cycle 1 concentrates on the house and what we do in different rooms; cycle 2 concentrates on traveling and places in town; and cycle 3 concentrates on food, cooking, and going to a restaurant.
