WE ARE THE WORLD
Students will learn about being a Global Citizen through lessons focused on cultures from around the planet, geography and special geological features. Students will be working independently and in groups using technology available for activities, games, research and collaborative projects to showcase their knowledge of the world and their place in it with an emphasis on empowering students on how to make the world a better place for everyone.

KIDS CAN CODE

Students will learn what coding is, be able to identify different types of coding languages, and apply basic coding skills using applications designed to introduce coding in an easy, accessible way.  This course is the prerequisite to Programming Prodigies.


PROGRAMMING PRODIGIES
Students will develop critical thinking skills, sequencing, perseverance and problem solving skills using applications designed to keep the experienced coder engaged and challenged.  Students must Take Kids Can Code prior to taking this course.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Students will become familiar with the 9 key Ps of digital citizenship: Passwords, Privacy, Personal information, Property, Permissions, Protection, Professionalism, Personal brand, and Photographs. Students will be able to safely and confidently navigate their online world while learning how to help others do the same by becoming Super Digital Citizens through a variety of activities, videos, games and cooperative projects.

3-D PRINTING
Students in the class will learn to utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software to create, save and then print items that they have designed, on one of the 3-D printers in Hillside. 

PHOTOJOURNALISM 1
Students will be able to define photojournalism as a career and describe the types of work photojournalists do. They will also be able to identify the main types of photographs used by photojournalists and collect their own photographs based on those types. Some basic photo editing skills will be included as well as becoming familiar with caption writing.

PHOTOJOURNALISM 2
Students will be able to utilize photographs and captions as a form of storytelling. Students will also explore topics through online research and use their own photographs to create stories and document important events. Students must take Photojournalism 1 prior to taking this course.

TECH EXPLORERS
Students will learn or enhance their proficiency in the proper posture and ergonomics of typing, locating and using letter and number keys with correct left/right hand placement. They will become familiar with Google tools and increase their level of comfort while applying them to their work. This includes word processing skills and how to manipulate documents using tools available to them. Students will also be introduced to good digital citizenship as it applies to online safety, media literacy and navigating websites for research.
