Montclair Public Schools' Mission

The Montclair Public School District is dedicated to creating a culture of learning and continuous improvement that provides every child with a high quality, creative, innovative and challenging education, through a magnet system of integrated schools in which every school represents a strong, diverse and vibrant community of learners.

The Montclair Public Schools will cultivate and support our students to become high academic achievers, curious and creative thinkers, and socially adept young people who are prepared for college, careers, and livelihoods in the 21st century.

Core Beliefs

We believe:

  • Challenging all students by providing high-quality academic opportunities is essential to student success.
  • All children, regardless of circumstances, can achieve at high levels.

  • Effective educators are key to improving growth in student achievement. In addition, the Board of Education and Central Office must promote an environment of continuous improvement and innovation that results in a high performing district that is 100% focused on student achievement and success.
  • Supportive and engaged parents, guardians and members of our diverse community must be welcomed and encouraged to become active participants in the education of our students.

2018-2019 Board Goals

Goal 1:  Be an effective and efficient governance body that establishes and directs the district goals.*

  • All workshop metings will be non-voting meetings by June 30, 2019.
    • The Board will direct the Superintendent to create organizational protocols to ensure all internal and external stakeholders adhere to Board meeting guidelines.
  • All meetings and communications will be grounded in the idea all multiple voices and perspectices are encouraged, supported and honored by June 30, 2019.
    • The Board will create a stakeholder feedback structure to assess growth in this area.
  • There will be clearly delineated internal communications structures by January 31, 2019.

Goal 2:  Be responsible for setting policies that prioritize and support growth for all students in areas of delineated need.

  • The Board will direct the Superintendent to provide the remaining information relative to the 17-18 Special Education Board Resolution by October 31, 2018.
  • The Board will direct the Superintendent to ensure the complete and full data reports, as aligned with the 17-18 Special Education Resolution, by June 30, 2019.
  • All administrative and student policies will be reviewed by June 30, 2019.
    • Quarterly reviews will document progress.
  • The Board will direct the Superintendent to create corresponding regulations for all administrative and student policies by June 30, 2019.
    • Quarterly reviews will document progress.
  • A quality review of newly created regulations will occur by June 30, 2019.
    • A purposeful sample of those impacted by the regulation will be used to assess the quality of regulations.

Goal 3:  Be aware of and responsive to the community’s varied values and priorities and shall engage in respectful and timely interactions with the entire community.

  • The Board will hold 2-4 community engagement listening meetings by June 30, 2019.
  • The Board will monitor and direct the Superintendent’s quarterly communication report (as outlined in the district’s strategic plan) by June 30, 2019.

Goal 4:  Build the capacity to assure the sound and fiscally responsible disposition of district resources to achieve its goals in a manner that benefits all students.

  • The Board will direct the Superintendent to create a theme-oriented budget (i.e., student supports, academic programming, staffing, special education, etc.) by June 30, 2019.
    • The Board will analyze a presentation by the Superintendent or her desigee in order to recommend how the exisiting monthly fiscal report can be reorganized to enhance the understanding of fiscal and programmatic alignment by October 31, 2018.
    • The Board will provide the Superintendent organizational topics that will inform the creation of a theme/content driven 19-20 district budget by November 30, 2018.
    • The Board will request target data to make informed budgetary decisions by June 30, 2019.

Goal 5:  Make measurable progress to becoming a district where race, ethnicity, and/or socio-economic status do not predict student achievement.

  • The Board will support the Superintendent in meeting the year one targets of the district’s Imagine 2023 Strategic Plan by June 30, 2019.

*The Board finalized their 18-19 goals at the September 17, 2018 Board Meeting.

  • Goal 4: Build the capacity to assure the sound and fiscally responsible disposition of district resources to achieve its goals in a manner that benefits all children.

  • Goal 5: Make measurable progress to becoming a district where race, ethnicity, and/or socio-economic status do not predict student achievement.

  • Goal 6: Hire a permanent Superintendent that embraces the mission, vision, core values, and goals of the district before the start of school year 2018-2019.

2017-2018 District Goals

District Goal 1/Board Goals 2, 5

The Montclair Public Schools will strive to support students in acquiring the tools to be successful in school and in life, as measured by the achievement of the following objectives:

OBJECTIVES

  • 1a: Completion of an assessment of district Special Education services, including, but not limited to, a detailed report of programs, demographics, pre-classification intervention procedures, out-of-district placements, and professional development by January 2018. Recommendations to be made to the Board.

  • 1b: Development of standards-based measures in the areas of Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry to determine students' strengths and needs and better inform instruction by June 2018.

  • 1c: Review of guidance services for students and families at Montclair High School, including a baseline survey of satisfaction/concerns and a plan for improvement by February 2018.

  • 1d: Development of a plan to increase student participation and diversity in Honors and AP courses at Montclair High by March 2018.

District Goal 2/Board Goals 2, 5

The Montclair Public Schools will provide professional opportunities for teachers and administrators in order to support student achievement and equity, as measured by the achievement of the following objectives:

OBJECTIVES

  • 2a: Full implementation of the Renaissance Learning program and professional development for teachers in grades 1 through 8 in the use of achievement information to inform their instructional practices by June 2018.

  • 2b: Implementation of the revised science curriculum for grades 1-5 with professional development provided to teachers in those grade levels, by June 2018.

  • 2c: Continuation of Undoing Racism training and follow-up sessions (Montclair High School, new staff members, support staff) by March 2018.

  • 2d: Review of SAIL program, with report on current status by November 2017 and recommendations for revision by January 2018.

District Goal 3/Board Goal 5

The Montclair Public Schools will continue to strive to reduce achievement gaps and address issues of equity as measured by the achievement of the following objectives:

OBJECTIVES

  • 3a: Creation of a MPS District Equity team to provide input and planning regarding professional development, curriculum and material selection, hiring, support services and parent/guardian engagement

  • 3b: Review of Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions at each school, including what we do, how we do it and our success by January 2018.

  • 3c: Professional development and support for Intervention and Referral Service (I&RS) teams by November 2017.

  • 3d: Program review of Title I to determine effective use of funds as evidenced by student outcomes by June 2018.

The Montclair Public Schools will compile information on all magnet schools and the small learning communities (SLC) at Montclair High School as measured by the following objective:

OBJECTIVE

Presentation to the Montclair Board of Education and Montclair public on current status of magnets and SLCs, including demographic data, mission, curricular differences, staffing and cost by April 2018.
