The Charles H. Bullock School’s fifth grade math team – the Mathletes – won team and individual awards at the Perennial Math Tournament at Rowan University on April 22. Competing for the first time, Bullock was the only school from Northern New Jersey at the Tournament.

Bullock’s Mathletes were comprised of seven fifth graders: Gabi Dawson, Addison Goodspeed-Moses, Michael Hadley, Nathan Holder-Narcisse, Ben Lepak, Tyler Porter and Benjamin Shandler. They were “coached” by Brenda Coe, a Bullock fifth grade math teacher and math subject leader, with additional assistance provided by Denea Kaup, also a Bullock fifth grade math teacher.

The Mathletes were divided into two teams for the Tournament, and competed in the Intermediate Level, facing fifth and sixth graders. One of the Mathlete teams, comprised of Gabi Dawson, Nathan Holder-Narcisse, Ben Lepak and Benjamin Shandler, placed second in the team competition. Benjamin Shandler also took second place in the individual competition and therefore qualified for the Perennial Math Competition’s Virtual On-Line National Tournament.

“The students demonstrated excellent math skills, sportsmanship and camaraderie, proudly representing Bullock and Montclair Public Schools,” said Bullock Principal Nami Kuwabara.
