The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
This year’s theme was “Cultivating a Culture of Peace.” The day is an opportunity to highlight and express messages of peace including: respect for life, human rights and fundamental freedoms; the promotion of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation; commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts; and adherence to freedom, justice, democracy, tolerance, solidarity, cooperation, pluralism, cultural diversity, dialogue and understanding at all levels of society and among nations.
Edgemont Montessori School, including students, staff and families, joined together to celebrate peace and global diversity with its annual Peace Parade around the school with Edgemont's Peace Dove.
Montclair High School’s Center for Social Justice gathered by CSJ’s Peace Pole outside of the school and read “Amazing Peace” by Maya Angelou. Then students signed a peace pledge, wrote peace notes and painted rocks to be placed by the peace pole. CSJ hopes to continue to cultivate a culture of peace throughout the CSJ and MHS community.
