Glenfield Middle School transformed its hallways Friday night into a modern-day “Black Wall Street,” highlighting local Black-owned businesses while also providing an opportunity to learn about the Greenwood district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which a white mob burned to the ground a century ago.

The event featured a historical presentation in the auditorium given by Dr. Saundra Collins, psychology professor at Montclair State University and a theatrical monologue by Hillside teacher Renee Graham, followed by a tour through the school’s version of “Black Wall Street.”

Greenwood at Glenfield was created by Glenfield parents Dee Thompson and Colleen Dougherty. Last year, while her child was attending Hillside Elementary School, Thompson held a “My Money Matters” lesson to teach students about Tulsa during the school’s Black Lives Matter Week of Action. Given the age of the students at Hillside, she only briefly touched on the background of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. This event was designed to provide a deep dive into the history while also showcasing the local Black-owned business community.

Superintendent Jonathan Ponds, Central Office staff, Montclair Board of Education members and community members — including 4th Ward Council Member David Cummings, Montclair NAACP President Roger Terry, retired Glenfield teacher and Tulsa resident Emmitt Murphy, local physician Dr. Renee Baskerville and Wally Choice, Jr. — were among the attendees.
