CBS New York visited Hillside ahead of the school’s International Night to highlight the stigma of food shaming and how Hillside, with the help of AAPI Montclair, is helping to combat it. Several students interviewed discussed how hurtful it is to feel teased over the way food they bring for lunch looks or smells. To break the stigma, students are participating in AAPI Montclair’s “Love Your Lunch,” a campaign to fight the lunch box shaming often experienced by Asian American and Pacific Islander children and others who bring culturally diverse foods to school. Love Your Lunch celebrates curiosity about foods from other cultures and encourages children to take pride in their families’ food traditions.

International Night was another way for students to celebrate their cultures and share their favorite ethnic dishes for everyone to sample. Close to 450 people attended the event which was filled not only with delicious and diverse food but cultural performances with more than 90 students onstage. Families had the pleasure of experiencing over 40 different types of meals from different regions and cultures and the opportunity to talk and learn from one another. “It was truly a culinary journey that brought the whole school community closer together,” said teacher Xiuxian Li who organized the event.
