Students from all three of Montclair’s middle schools participated in the Middle School Model United Nations Conference (MidMUNC), hosted by Montclair High School. It is a simulation of the U.N. Committees and other multilateral bodies. Students take on the role of a national ambassador to the United Nations and support their country's position on various pressing international and historical issues. MidMUNC gives students the opportunity to delve into the world of international affairs firsthand, while providing students with the chance to write, discuss, and debate mock resolutions.

Students addressed problems that face the real world, representing their assigned country's position in areas such as Food & Agriculture, Human Rights and International Security. The goal is to enhance political awareness and responsible citizenship through the study and debate of political issues in an intellectual setting.

“This event teaches public speaking, debate, critical thinking,” said Glenfield social studies teacher Syreeta Carrington who was the advisor to Glenfield students. “It’s a great experience. They really have to think on their feet.”

Anna, a 6th grader, waited excitedly for the awards ceremony. “I wrote an amendment and it passed!” she exclaimed.

“We’re so glad our students have the opportunity to serve as ambassadors,” said Renaissance Principal Dr. Barbara Weller, “thinking about world issues from other perspectives, which helps to clarify their own point of view.”
