Nishuane School continued its annual literacy outreach project, Pennies for Pages, led by School Action Team Committee co-chairs Denise Kolenovic and Tara Wentzell. For the past 12 weeks, students read and raised funds for the Montclair Public Library. Every book read by a student during this initiative, in school and at home, earned one penny to donate towards the library.

Pennies for Pages began on Dr. Seuss’s birthday during Read Across America Week. The students took part in different activities that showcased a love of books and sparked an interest in reading. To celebrate Dr. Seuss during our kick-off week, students wore their pajamas to school (I Am NOT Going to Get Up Today), dressed up as what they want to be when they are older (Oh, the Places You’ll Go!), wore their clothes inside out, backwards, or mismatched (Wacky Wednesday), wore a hat to school (The 500 HATS of Bartholomew Cubbins), and wore Nishuane’s colors (Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!).

Throughout the month of March, students participated in a Book Swap. Children brought in books from home, which were then organized into categories such as grade level, nonfiction, chapter books, etc. The students were able to “swap” their book with a different book from another Nishuane student. Many students were able to read and enjoy “new” books!

In April, Annie Silvestro, the author of Bunny’s Book Club, shared her book with the students. She spoke with them about the process of writing such as generating a topic, revising and editing, and publishing a book. The students were able to ask Silvestro questions about the writing profession. Her insight was invaluable to the future authors and illustrators at Nishuane.

To reveal how much money the students earned for the Montclair Public Library, Nishuane had a Pennies for Pages Celebration on Fri., May 25. The students were first shown a video, created by Wentzell, in which some students explained the importance of reading, why they liked reading, and what types of books they enjoyed reading. Students then listened to a story read aloud by Peter Coyl, from the Montclair Public Library. Nishuane then presented Coyl with a check for $432.23. Through this initiative, the students imagined, invented, studied, laughed, enjoyed, and learned. Nishuane School was thrilled to partner with the Montclair Public Library to instill a love for reading in children.
