Northeast Students Shine at Geo Bee

Northeast Students Shine at Geo Bee
Posted on 02/22/2019
On Sat., Feb. 9, Northeast held its 17th Annual Geography Bee. The goal of the Bee is to get all Northeast students, from Kindergarten through 5th grade and their families, excited about geography and the world around us. In the months leading up to the Bee, students form teams of three and meet regularly to practice. Areas of study include geography terms, state capitals, general world geographical knowledge, manmade and natural landmarks, climate and topographical data and more. Each team is led by a parent captain and captains are also invited to participate in the Captain's Challenge round at the Bee.

This year, 54 teams comprised of 162 students participated, with four rounds each of grades K-2 and 3-5. At the end of the 4th round per division, a championship round was held. This year, the K-2 Geography Bee Champions were Julia Kroen, Morgan Angelillo and Jane Determann (pictured below). For their prize, they enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the PTA with Mrs. Linda Thompson, Interim Principal.

The 3-5 Geography Bee champions were Lara Anthony, Anastasia Zarenin and Angelina Zarenin (pictured below). These students are looking forward to their grand prize -- a limousine ride into Times Square to enjoy National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey. The winners will have the opportunity to experience a walk-through adventure across the Pacific Ocean and enjoy a NYC lunch before riding back to school in style!

In addition to all the work that the teams and parents put in, the Geo Bee is the result of countless hours of work by many volunteers including PTA co-chairs Danielle Addair and Amruta Karmarker, Director Lily Knutzen and Master of Ceremonies Matt Knutzen, as well as a host of Northeast teachers and parents acting as judges and facilitators.
