Students look at the plaque in the District office

Seventh graders from Renaissance Middle School toured historic sites around Montclair during the annual “Revolutionary Walk” through town on Fri., May 26.

Students stopped at a number locations where they learned more about each including Memorial Rock, The Slave House, Evergreens, The Old Stagecoach, Old Munn Tavern, 140 Union Street, the Israel Crane House and the Montclair Board of Education building, formerly the very first schoolhouse in Montclair.

During that stop, students were greeted by former Renaissance school principal, Dr. Barbara Weller. Weller gave students a brief history lesson on the schoolhouse and its attendees at the time, which were primarily white, upper middle class boys, she explained.

Students also got a close-up look at a tribute to the first Superintendent of the Montclair Public Schools, Randall Spaulding, by artist/sculptor Gutzon Borglum who created Mount Rushmore. The walk was a culmination of the students’ study of the colonial period.

Dr. Weller points out items of interest.
