Montclair Public Schools' staff and members of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority dressed in their official colors in honor of their fellow AKA sister Kamala Harris being sworn in as the first female, Black, Asian-American Vice President of the United States. AKA declared January 20 as “Kamala D. Harris Day,” and asked members to celebrate the historic moment by wearing pink and pearls, representing the colors and symbols of the sorority. Alpha Kappa Alpha was the country’s first Black sorority, founded at Harris’ alma mater Howard University, on January 15, 1908.

"Each class I teach learns of the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. who in 1908 understood and exemplified the power of education, sisterhood, and service. These women have taught us that with the power of education and sisterhood combined with a commitment to service, we can transform our communities and the world."  – Davida Harewood, teacher, Montclair High School

"It seems especially historic that Madam Vice President Kamala D. Harris has been elected on the 100th anniversary of Women's Suffrage, granting women the right to vote. It's an honor to be part of a beloved sisterhood which is dedicated to education, to community service, and to service to all mankind. It's a great honor to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the legacy of my mom, Dr. Carole Willis (a golden soror who served three terms as a Montclair Board member and also as a Vice President of the MBOE and NJ School Boards Association). I enjoy taking the time to teach and to inspire our youth and am glad that our Vice President Kamala Harris feels the same. 'I hope that by being a 'first,' I inspire young people to pursue their dreams,' Kamala Harris." Courtney Washington, teacher, Glenfield Middle School
