"I did it, I really did it."
"I can't believe it!"
"My future is NOW!"
Those were just some of the words of joy one could hear last Wednesday, Feb. 22, when Montclair High School held its 10th annual On-site Admissions event in the brand new media center.
With more than 20 institutions and close to 100 students participating, it was a joy to see the students come dressed for success. With transcripts, recommendation letters, and test scores in hand, always keeping in mind that "you never get a second chance to make a first impression," the MHS students shone throughout the process. At this writing more than 50 students received either definite or provisional acceptance to college, as a result of their having participated in the On-site Admissions event. Those who were not given immediate acceptance were asked to submit supplementary materials.
On two successive Wednesdays immediately prior to the "big day," orientation sessions were held, wherein MHS guidance counselors informed the participants about such things as the importance of proper interview attire, interview skills that win, writing the successful essay, financial aid, and the application process. On Wednesday, Feb. 15, Assistant Superintendent for Equity, Kendra Johnson, held a mock interview and stimulated her teen audience by telling them of her experiences rising to her standard of excellence--and how they can follow similar paths.
The On-site Admissions days are chaired by Joyce Hobbs, MHS Learning Consultant and co-chaired by Guidance Counselor, Mark Walters. Every member of the Guidance Department, including Guidance Director Dustin Bayer, took an active role in assuring the project's success. “It’s not every day that we get to make an instant, lasting positive impact on our students,” said Bayer. “The workshops and On-site Admissions days and event did just that!”
