During Black History Month, Renaissance students have been studying Black History & Sports: The Story of the Syracuse 8, a group of African American football players at Syracuse University whose protests in the 1960s and boycott of the team’s 1970 season, highlighted racial inequities in collegiate athletics. Alumnus Alexander Tsemberis designed a curriculum about the Syracuse 8 that was taught over 4-6 class periods by himself and Rodney Jackson, Renaissance’s Sports, Race, and History instructor.

The culminating event took place on Friday, Feb. 21 at Montclair High School where two members of the Syracuse 8, Greg Allen and John Lobon, were on hand for a moving and impactful assembly. Students had the opportunity to hear firsthand about the historic activism of the members of the original Syracuse 8. Also in attendance was Montclair class of 1965 graduate Dave Johnson, who shared his experiences with racism during his collegiate football career at Syracuse.

“The conversation sparked thoughtful dialogue, with students asking powerful questions and making connections to issues of equity today,” said Principal Maria Francisco. “The energy in the room was inspiring, and the assembly truly reinforced the themes of resilience, activism, and standing up for what is right.”
