Thanksgiving Greetings

Thanksgiving Greetings
Posted on 11/26/2019
Dear Families, Colleagues, and Community Members,

We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve the Montclair Public Schools. Montclair is a remarkable community with many significant resources. Over the last several months, we have made noteworthy improvements by creating New Beginnings.

The District needed the right leadership team to change its trajectory. In addition to the Interim Superintendent of Schools, we have recruited and selected several new administrators:
  • Interim Director of Elementary Education for Elementary Schools, Restorative Justice, and Title 1;
  • Staff Coach for Montclair High School and Special Education;
  • Interim Assistant Superintendent for Equity, Curriculum, and Instruction who will be second in command and will supervise Middle Schools;
  • and Interim Director of Human Resources.
Each of these individuals contributes to improved operations of the school district. Additionally, the Board of Education adopted clear goals to:
  • Raise student achievement,
  • Increase fiscal discipline,
  • Improve collaboration, and
  • Stabilize district leadership.

We are actively focusing on eliminating the opportunity gap, addressing systemic equity issues by creating a long-range plan to ensure our facilities are up-to-date, and implementing a more collaborative budget process.  In January we will begin to develop a Strategic Plan by identifying several areas of focus that will guide the work of the District over the next three years. We are currently seeking a permanent Human Resources Director.

We eagerly recognize our talented students who perform in a variety of musical productions, compete in academic challenges, participate in a wealth of organizations and clubs, and generously commit their time to community service.  A number of our student athletes recently made college or university commitments and our fall sports teams enjoyed the highs and lows of competition.

We are proud to collaborate with partners who support families and students in the community. One of our community partners, Mr. James Harris, was recently recognized for his community service as chairperson of the Education Committee of the Montclair NAACP, while our longest serving Board Member, Anne Mernin, received the Julian Bond Award for community service at the annual NAACP Thurgood Marshall Freedom Fund dinner. In addition, two of our community partners celebrated milestone anniversaries: Montclair Child Development Center serving families and children for 50 years while IMANI Programs have been providing educational support for Montclair students for 20 years.

As we enter the holiday season, we send you our very best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving and extend our appreciation to the community for coming together to strengthen the Montclair Public Schools.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Eve Robinson
President of the Montclair Board of Education

Dr. Nathan Parker
Interim Superintendent of Schools
