In a continued effort to collaborate with the community, Montclair Public Schools Superintendent Kendra Johnson spoke at Montclair’s Saint Peter Claver Church on Sun., Jan. 20.  She was invited by the Black Catholic Concerns Ministry of St. Peter’s, chaired by Tina Schumacher, district Personnel secretary. Dr. Johnson led an engaging discussion on the topic, “Derailing Racism.”

“As not only the first permanent African American superintendent but the first female African American superintendent, it was an honor to have Dr. Johnson speak to our congregation and community members on the day we recognize the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Schumacher.

“It was a diverse group of attendees because we are a diverse church,” she continued. “Dr. Johnson’s presentation was so encompassing and so complete. Everyone had such a positive response.”

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence Executive Director Masiel Rodriguez-Vars, a member of St. Peter’s added, "Dr. Johnson's talk on ‘Derailing Racism’ was a powerful way to celebrate MLK's legacy.  St. Peter Claver is home to some of the families who helped launch our magnet schools and continues to serve a diverse community. Her insight and resource-sharing inspired us and gave us concrete ways to continue Dr. King's work."
