Third graders from Montclair’s elementary schools gathered at Hillside for a performance by The Montclair Orchestra on Thurs., June 7. Students from Bullock and Edgemont took advantage of the cool morning to enjoy the fresh air and walk to Hillside while the rest were bussed. Once there, they were treated to a unique rendition of “Peter and the Wolf.”

The Montclair Orchestra is a new training orchestra that gives college music students the chance to play alongside professional musicians. It was established to provide orchestral music to Montclair and the surrounding communities. Comprised of professional, conservatory, and highly trained amateur musicians, the Montclair Orchestra endeavors to perform a wide range of music from the baroque through modern works, including new works by talented composers at local music conservatories and strives to complement the rich cultural offerings of Montclair.

The orchestra has five concerts a year, and next year will include a special children's concert featuring the story of "Peter Rabbit." The professional musicians that play with the orchestra come from some of the very best orchestras in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra is managed by Montclair parent Andre Weker, and the Music Director and Conductor is David Chan, the concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera. The narrator for the story in the Hillside performance was Dagmara Dominczyk, who is an actor and also a Montclair parent. The event was supported in part by the Cali School of Music at Montclair State University.
