Buzz Aldrin Middle School held a special Black History Month program on Thurs., Feb. 22. Students viewed the film “Our Schools, Our Town,” about the history of Montclair’s magnet school system. They then heard personal reflections from a panel of Montclair’s own: Dr. Lillie Edwards, Professor Emerita of History and African-American studies at Drew University, former Board of Education members Mr. David Cummings and Dr. Carole Willis, and film creator, Ms. Masiel Rodrigues-Vars. The panelists answered thoughtful questions about desegregation and conversations on race in America today. “We are so appreciative of those who gave up their time to visit with our students and tell their stories,” said Principal Jill Sack.

In her newsletter, Sack thanked in-class support teacher Natale Burrell for organizing this year’s Black History Month program, as well as music teacher Bill Strauss and the band, Taylor Mandel and soloist Elijah Dorrelian, technology teacher Brian Lacivita, the Stage Crew and Assistant Principal Major Jennings for helping to coordinate this event.
