Nishuane celebrates Autism Awareness Month.

Throughout the month of April, students and staff from Nishuane participated in a variety of activities to recognize Autism Awareness Month. To prepare for the month-long celebration, all staff members were given resources, from Autism Speaks, explaining the definition of autism, characteristics of autism, and strategies to support students with autism throughout the school community. Teachers continued these conversations within their Professional Learning Communities.

Each day, students learned about autism through videos, books, or school-wide announcements. Nishuane’s Principal Jill McLaughlin, visited classrooms to read and discuss the book All My Stripes: A Story for Children with Autism. The videos, such as “What’s Up with Jake?” and “What Makes You Amazing,” explained autism in child-friendly language and encouraged conversations about embracing our differences. School-wide announcements highlighted the talents of different individuals with autism such as Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokemon. Announcements also highlighted how to be a good friend to a classmate with autism.

Autism Awareness Month culminated with a schoolwide celebration. The school listened to a poem written by teacher Tara Wentzell, entitled “I am a Kid.” Students then decorated puzzle pieces by drawing their favorite thing about Nishuane. The school then met outside, with partnering classes, to discuss the similarities and differences between their puzzle pieces. The students and staff discussed how every puzzle piece has something unique to add, and that those pieces come together to create a beautiful picture. Lastly, Nishuane blew bubbles in honor of Autism Awareness Month.
