Bradford students pedaled safely to school on Wed., June 7, navigating through the school's first designated pop-up bicycle lane. The joint effort between Bradford, the Montclair Police Department and Bike & Walk Montclair celebrated Bradford’s last Walk/Bus/Bike to School Day of the school year and featured a designated lane for riders as well as police escorts.

Orange police cones mark the lane for the bicyclists

The official pop-up bicycle lane began at Mountainside Pool, continued north on Upper Mountain Ave. with a right on to Mt. Hebron Road, then across Mt. Hebron at the College Ave. crosswalk. Orange cones separated the lane from vehicular traffic, with white bicycle stencils identifying the bike lane.

Cyclists, large and small, make their way down the bicycle lane.

This is the fourth Montclair school to have a pop-up bike lane (Renaissance, Edgemont and Charles H. Bullock previously hosted the event). Lieutenant Stephanie Egnezzo who heads MPD’s Uniform and Traffic Bureau, helps make pop-up bicycle lanes possible by advising school volunteers how to execute these lanes and also by applying regularly for grants needed to fund special MPD details, like this. The MPD was on hand at the Mountainside Pool starting point, escorting riders to Bradford and greeting riders at a table at Bradford’s entrance where road safety information for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists and fun, eye-catching (in a good way) gadgets like blinking clip-on reflectors were handed out.

Other volunteers from Bike Walk Montclair painted the bike lane symbols early on June 7. Bike & Walk Montclair is a local, nonprofit organization that promotes safe biking and walking, and actively support the Montclair Public Schools.

“This was our biggest turnout to date,” said Egnezzo.
