Some of the "Dynamic Doors," competing for the trophy, below right.
On Wednesday, March 2, Watchung celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America Day with special guests who came to the elementary school to visit classrooms and read to the students (see photos, below.).
Visitors included staff from Central Office and members of the Montclair Police and Fire Departments.
Montclair Fire Chief John Herrmann, who has spent the past 34 years as a firefighter in the township, read the Dr. Seuss book "I Can Read with my Eyes Shut," to second graders. He also spent time answering some questions and speaking with the inquisitive kids. "It's very important that you pay attention to your teachers," he said. "They are giving you the tools to learn and be productive and be whatever you want to be when you grow up. Keep reading and enjoy it!"
Montclair Police Sergeant Tyrone Williams stopped by a third grade classroom to read Dr. Seuss' "There's a Wocket in My Pocket."
Even Principal Anthony Grosso took a moment to join in, reading "Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler to Kindergarteners.
In addition to the Read In, the school was participating in a "Dynamic Door" decorating contest as a way of engaging all of the classes in celebrating reading. Each classroom door had to be based on a Dr. Seuss book and follow a rubric in order to qualify for the trophy.
