The 27th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship Breakfast was held on Monday morning, at the George Inness Annex of Montclair High School. The Sincere Silvera, a student at the Whitney E. Houston Academy in East Orange gave a moving presentation on “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Perspective on the World Today.” Also giving a presentation was Montclair High School’s Civics and Government Institute, led by advisor Tom Manos.

Several of Montclair’s schools held assemblies on Friday, Jan. 15 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while others hosted service activities on Monday, Jan. 18, the district’s day off.

Below: Glenfield middle school celebrated King with an assembly, “Glenfield: Then and Now” which included a slide show presented by resource room teacher Margaret Whitsett showing the history of Glenfield through the years. Special guest Rabbi Israel Dresner gave an inspiring speech to attendees recounting the time he spent with Dr. King. Councilwoman Dr. Renee Baskerville shared her thoughts on what it was like in Montclair during the Civil Rights movement. In addition, teacher Dan Gill told the audience that “If we just celebrate on one day and then go back to our negative ways, we have not honored Dr. King.” Students Andrew Frazier and Brandon Sims read essays and the event included musical performances.
