Glenfield ProjectGlenfield will be featured in an episode of NJTV's "Classroom Close-up," that focuses on how the visual and performing arts magnet middle school incorporates the arts with academics through creative classes and projects. The episode, which airs May 1, 7, 29 and June 1 (click here for NJTV cable channels), features how students demonstrate acting abilities with civic and government research to conduct a mock trial and an art therapy workshop using mirrors that combines artistic expression with lessons about body image.

"During our mock trials, our students transform into the characters they are playing," said course teacher Syreeta Carrington. Not only does the activity give students in grades six through eight a chance to step into roles but to truly get a hands-on experience of courtroom proceedings.

Last February, Glenfield seventh graders were given an opportunity to participate in a special art project called "The Mirror Project," correlating with Body Acceptance Week. In conjunction with Montclair State University, Montclair's Health and Wellness Partnership, and Glenfield's Guidance Department, the Mirror Project is designed to focus on the subject of body and self -image. Free to design individual mirrors however they chose, male and female students reflected and expressed their feelings towards body image through their art and words.

Art teacher Catherine Kondreck was pleased to see students putting so much thought into their projects. "It's such an important issue for teenagers today," said Kondreck. "This is a unique and creative way for students to express themselves."
