Buzz Aldrin Middle School (BAMS) students Ede Koehlert and Sylvie Wurmser finished in fourth place in the country at the Project CSGIRLS trademark national competition, designed to challenge middle school girls to actively use computer science and technology to develop a solution to an imminent social problem. The ProjectCSGIRLS is the nation's oldest and largest computer science competition for middle school girls. Avid bikers, Koehlert and Wurmser entered their creation,"The Revolution Sensor," a device to promote bike safety and help cyclists protect themselves.

They recently travelled to Washington, D.C. to accept the award at the Project CSGIRLS National Gala. The event is a celebration of girls in computing and a forum to discuss the importance of women in technology. Over two days, the national finalists heard from leading guest speakers, participated in hands-on workshops, presented their tech projects on stage, and took part in a formal awards ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments and aspirations. “Congratulations to Edie and Sylvie for not only this accomplishment, but also being three-time competitors; semi-finalist is sixth grade and finalists the past two years,” said coach/STEM coordinator Dan Taylor. “In the five years that we have had girls as part of this program, this is the highest finish ever achieved by a team from our school. We are very proud of them.”

Founded in 2013, ProjectCSGIRLS is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in computing and technology. Its unique idea of a technology and computer science competition for middle school girls stemmed from the fact that a large chunk of learning and development occurs during the critical middle school period. In today's world where technology is becoming increasingly prominent and essential to nearly every field of study, it aims to instill a love for computing and technology in middle school girls and show them how innovative and creative they can be and encourage them to develop ideas that are powerful and cutting-edge.
