Montclair Public Schools

Forty-three Montclair High School seniors have attained the New Jersey Seal of Biliteracy across three languages. This was the Montclair Public Schools’ inaugural year participating in the program. By language, thirty-seven students earned the Seal in Spanish and six in French. One student earned the Seal in two languages, Bulgarian and Spanish.

The Seal of Biliteracy is an official recognition from the New Jersey Department of Education. In order to be eligible to receive the Seal upon graduating from high school a student must achieve Intermediate-Mid or higher proficiency in at least one language other than English, as well as a score of “proficient” or higher in English Language Arts. At the Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 17, 2019 recipients of the Seal were presented with an official certificate from the NJDOE with the seal insignia noting the language(s) in which they attained the Seal. In addition, the insignia of the "New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy" will appear on each student's official high school transcript. 

Frank Sedita, Supervisor of World Languages & ESL K-12 presented seniors with their certificate and medallion to proudly wear at graduation. Sedita noted that “The Seal of Biliteracy is not just an award, but rather a nationally recognized credential that attests to each recipient’s unwavering dedication to proficiency and global citizenship. The Seal affirms that these seniors are prepared to utilize the language that they have acquired as they commence their post-secondary pursuits.”
