Sergio Gonzalez was officially sworn in as a member of the Montclair Board of Education at its meeting on Sept. 23, 2019. Gonzalez is a New Jersey native originating from Hudson County and has lived most of his life in New Jersey. He is a Fordham MBA, Magna Cum Laude, and holds a BS from Rutgers University with professional experience in social media and technology in various roles including founder and strategist.
“This community is very warm and welcoming,” said Gonzalez about his decision to join the Board. “I wanted to see what I could do to give back. I feel that there is an opportunity to leverage my experiences and professional background to help make a positive impact.”
As the father of two young children, the eldest a Kindergartener at Nishuane, Gonzalez has a vested interest in the education system and felt the time was right. “I wanted to jump into it now. I have at least a 20-year outlook of being in this community, so now is the time to do it if I’m going to do it.”
Gonzalez comes into this new phase with a definitive idea about what he wants to bring to the Board and to Montclair. “There’s a lot happening quickly. Our lives are changing so fast. We’re living differently with social media, autonomous vehicles, cell phones with broadband speed,” he explained. “They’re going to have a significant impact on how we interact with our world. We need to take a measured approach to how we use technology. This is where I can lend my expertise to ensure we are using these things responsibly.”
As he begins his tenure, he says he’s excited to get to work and hopes his addition to the Board “will help facilitate organizational stability.”
