Bradford
Bradford Students in Grades 3-5 recently had a walk-a-thon on the campus of Montclair State University. Principal Naomi Kirkman presented Ann Mernin with a check with the funds raised for Toni's Kitchen ($2,400). Students did follow-up math learning extensions based on how far the kids walked.

The walk-a-thon is held annually and is coordinated by Phys Ed teacher Tom Maloney. Students in Grades 4 and 5 walk 10k and students in Grades 2 and 3 walk 5k. Most families donate prior to the walk, though some families send donations after their students have completed the walk. The walkathon takes place around the MSU campus and finishes with laps around Sprague Field. “The students are eager to complete as many laps as possible, so they are mostly running around the football field,” said Maloney. In addition, the Bradford participants enjoy engaging with the MSU students. “They have always helped with the walkathon, providing encouragement to our students while assisting with the organization of the event,” added Maloney.

Watchung
Watchung Classes taking STEAM and Greenhouse Flex this trimester have been a part of planting seeds and managing the hydroponic systems in the greenhouse. Students have been growing a variety of herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers and three different greens; romaine, red leaf, and baby swiss chard.

A salad tasting day in the greenhouse last week which was fun and educational. Students used their senses to observe the similarities and differences of the three lettuce varieties and did a taste test to determine which they liked the most. Red leaf and romaine were most popular, but some students actually preferred the slight bitterness of the swiss chard.

The remainder of the lettuce crop (about 25 heads) was donated to Toni's Kitchen. “We expect to continue this relationship, producing and donating about 30 heads of lettuce every two weeks,” said Drury Thorp. “The staff was very appreciative. Many thanks to the students who helped to grow, harvest and deliver the lettuce to Toni's Kitchen!”
