Approximately 24 parents participated in an interactive workshop on anxiety, facilitated by Eloiza Jorge, Academy Counselor at Buzz Aldrin Middle School. The PTA-sponsored parent learning session Tues., Feb. 11 included break-out sessions, questions and answers and discussions on concerns facing their teens in a middle school environment and moving forward. On hand were Buzz Aldrin Principal Jill Sack, Assistant Principal Major Jennings and District Mental Health/Anti-Bullying Coordinator Andrew Evangelista.

Parents learned and practiced mindfulness exercises and anxiety-reducing techniques. They also engaged in a cooperative learning activity to delve more deeply into adolescent development. The activity not only gave parents a chance to build social bonds, it also gave them a chance to situate their children’s behaviors in the context of normal growth and development. Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to talk and learn from other parents. They also appreciated their experiences being affirmed and validated.
