The Montclair Public Schools will be hosting a series of
Parent University virtual sessions on how the pandemic has affected the mental health of our children. We will discuss strategies for dealing with stress and anxiety during this challenging time. We will also discuss ideas to help children cope and manage social issues that may arise during remote learning.
Three sessions will be offered online and will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and broken down by grade level. Workshops will take place Monday, Dec. 14, Wednesday, Dec. 16 and Thursday, Dec. 17. See flyer in

The workshops will feature two experts in the field of mental health:
Lauren Hyman Kaplan, M.A, is a school consultant, emotional intelligence coach and counselor in the field of social-emotional learning. She is a former teacher and school counselor with over 20 years of experience training and providing consulting to schools around the United States and the world. She is an instructor for the Certificate in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Character Development at the Academy for SEL in Schools at Rutgers University, an instructor at Bank Street College of Education and the co-author of the New York State "Interpersonal Violence Prevention Resource Guide for Parents and Educators" and "The Importance of Self Awareness for School Counselors in Emotionally Intelligent School Counseling." She lives in Montclair with her husband and two children.
Erin Bruno, M.A., has been working in the field of social-emotional learning for over 24 years, first as a trainer for the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program and currently as the Director of the Rutgers University’s Behavioral Research and Training Institute’s, Social Decision Making Program. Bruno delivers training and consultation to teachers, mental health professionals, youth and families in the area of social emotional learning which includes skills for self-regulation, self/social awareness, problem solving/critical thinking and conflict resolution.
In addition,
Bilingual Parent University will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 7-8:30 p.m. for families of our English Language Learners. This workshop, which will be conducted in Spanish, will provide strategies for supporting your child during remote and hybrid learning. See details in
