Upon the recommendation of Montclair Public Schools Superintendent Jonathan Ponds, the Montclair Board of Education appointed Briony Carr-Clemente as principal of Edgemont School at its February 17 public meeting. Carr-Clemente, a proud Montclair resident with children in the district, will take the helm on April 20. Former Hillside principal, Mr. Mike Chiles, is serving as interim principal.

Carr-Clemente comes to Montclair with 22 years of experience in the field of education. She has worked in school systems in NJ, PA and NY. She was an AmeriCorps member in Paterson, taught middle school in Philadelphia and Harlem, and elementary school in the Bronx. In addition to teaching, she was a principal in Harlem, the Bronx, and Perth Amboy, NJ. Her breadth of experience also includes being a selector for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, and she has participated in trainings in a variety of academic and social-emotional practices and approaches such as Restorative Justice, Equity, Anti-Racism, Trauma-Sensitive/Trauma-Informed, Emotional Intelligence (Yale Center), and Blended Learning.

“With her strong instructional background and experience in many of the initiatives that the district is undertaking, we are confident that she will serve the Edgemont community well,” says Ponds.

Carr-Clemente began her education earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Douglass College, Rutgers University, a Master of Science in Elementary Education from Hunter College, The City University of New York, and a Certificate of Advanced Study from the College of Saint Rose. She holds Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6, School Administrator/Supervisor, and School District Administrator New Jersey certificates.
