On Thursday February 11, Glenfield Social Studies teacher Vincent Pelli and Montclair Community Leader Diane Anglin hosted its annual speaker series that was rechristened as the
Karen Wingfield ‘Growing Up Montclair’ Speaker Forum in remembrance of event co-founder and long-time district educator Karen Wingfield.
Each year, lifelong Montclairions visit Pelli’s classes to talk about their experiences in the Montclair school system through a racial lens. The forum has served as a wonderful way to infuse local history into the curriculum.
The panelists were a mix of new and returning guests: Donna Wingfield-Feggins (Karen Wingfield’s sister), Doug Moore, Steven Walker, Tarik Beasley, and Shannon Whitehead.
"As the audience laughed, learned and cried with the panelists, we all gained a better understanding about why the town of Montclair is so special and why it is important that we strive to preserve its legacy," said Principal Erika Pierce. "Thank you, Mr. Pelli for facilitating such a wonderful event. Ms. Wingfield would be proud"
