On Monday, Oct. 10, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Edgemont celebrated and honored Northern New Jersey indigenous communities at its second annual Drum Circle.

Organized by the Edgemont PTA Anti-Racism and Equity Committee, the event for students and their families included an acknowledgement of the land on which the school is built, a chalk mural created and decorated by Edgemont students and Montclair High School student volunteers and instruction by professional percussionist William Ruiz.

Last October, President Joe Biden signed the first presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples’ Day to recognize the contributions that Indigenous peoples have made throughout history — in public service, entrepreneurship, scholarship, the arts, and countless other fields — are integral to our Nation, our culture, and our society.
