More than 40 English Language Learner (ELL) families attended Montclair Public Schools’ recent English as a Second Language (ESL) Parent Night. District ESL liaison teachers and bilingual interpreters Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish were on hand to provide language assistance.
The Parent Night, which began with a welcome from Superintendent Jonathan Ponds (below, right) included Technology Department updates, Genesis Parent Portal tutorial videos, overview of student and parent/guardian supports and small break out group question and answer session.
ESL liaison teachers shared with parents ways to support ELLs at home. "This was an excellent ESL night and a great way to connect with folks,” said one caregiver. “I will try to encourage my child to reach out to other ESL friends."
Director of Technology Chris Graber (above) explained the Emergency Connectivity Fund and how to reach the Office of Technology team if there is a need for WiFi to support students' learning at home. Chromebooks were available for attendees to practice and learn how to find various school forms, reset their password, check students' grades and attendance in Genesis.
District IT Technician Andre Aparcana shared four Spanish tutorial videos. "So grateful for the Technology Department Director to share the information and for bringing all the Chromebooks for us to get experience on,” said one parent. Another participant whose child is not in an ESL program but participated in the evening program said, "We wanted to be here because we want to learn more about how to research the school website and find more school information online and this was very helpful.”
Nicholas Santangelo, Counselor at Montclair High School introduced the K-12 Counseling Team, and explained their roles. Sophia Kenny, Director of School Counseling Services and her bilingual intern Debbie, were also present “I was so impressed with what MPS is offering to the ELL families,” said Debbie. “I am inspired by the team and would like to volunteer my time to do more with them too."
Childcare was provided by MHS Spanish class student-volunteers: Alexandra Gawler, Natalie Mora Rojas, Luaciana Urquijo, Antonia Greer and Aurora Avid who were recommended by their teacher Silvia Jankowski.
