On Monday, May 13, the Montclair Board of Education (Board) approved the District’s budget that preserves the high-quality culture of learning for a diverse population and upholds the integrated magnet system that makes Montclair unique. The budget funds the staff workforce without any cuts for budgetary purposes, maintains a variety of programs including the arts across all schools, and provides for continued upgrades in technology infrastructure that will support 21st century teaching and learning. “I am pleased with this budget cycle from its inception to final adoption as it benefits our students and families but also has our residents in mind. We kept the tax increase to the 2% cap, which benefits all those living in town with or without children in the schools,”  said Board President Melanie Deysher.

Professional development for staff is supported by this budget, and the District expects to make progress in providing targeted interventions for students. One of the District’s new investments includes a wider use of assessment tools. The District is also mobilizing and training its partners in effective academic and social emotional methods so they can provide enhanced tutoring and support.

“I am delighted that our Board members endorsed our vision of the best possible learning environment for Montclair students,” said Superintendent Jonathan Ponds. “Their support sends a message to students, teachers, and administration as well as parents and caregivers that they believe the District is on the right trajectory to provide high-quality educational opportunities.”

The process of presenting and approving the budget began in October with Districtwide department meetings and preliminary presentations to the Board. “The approved budget is structured so that a framework exists to maintain stability for years to come,” said Business Administrator Christina Hunt.
