Montclair High School’s Robotics Team had a successful showing at the Warren Hills Mid-Atlantic FIRST Robotics Competition earning the Autonomous Award. The award “celebrates the team that has demonstrated consistent, reliable, high-performance robot operation during autonomously managed actions. Evaluations are based on the robot’s ability to sense its surroundings, position itself or onboard mechanisms appropriately, and execute tasks.”

Thirty-one teams competed with matches played in three-team alliances (six robots on the field at once). Based on performance in the qualifying rounds, Montclair was selected to be on an alliance team with Newton and Denville for playoff competition. The alliance team advanced through the playoff rounds and won the best two out of three final.

The Robotics Team, composed of 68 members, is the largest STEM club at the high school. The Team began training in September and works six to eight weeks designing, manufacturing and coding a robot before competitions begin.

"Congratulations to the robotics squad for a terrific performance at Warren Hills. I'm delighted that we will have another great team at Montclair High School,” said Superintendent Jonathan Ponds.

At the March 1 Board of Education meeting, Ponds announced beginning in the 2023-24 school year, the Robotics Team will officially become the only non-athletic team at MHS and will have its own operations budget for equipment and transportation.
