Superintendent Jonathan Ponds announced today that Dr. Shivoyne Trim will serve as the District’s next Director of Pupil Services. The Board of Education approved the appointment at its Wednesday meeting.

Dr. Trim currently serves as Supervisor of Pupil Services at Montclair High School, a position she has held since 2017. She worked previously as a special education intervention specialist for the New Jersey Department of Education and served for a decade as a school psychologist in Paterson. She has also worked as a counselor at Passaic High School and as a domestic violence and sexual assault counselor at the Passaic County Women’s Center.

“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Trim as the District’s new Director of Pupil Services,” Ponds said. “She has excelled in her responsibilities at the high school for several years and I am confident she will be a huge asset for all our schools in her new position.”

"I'm very excited for this opportunity to lead Montclair Public Schools’ Pupil Services Department, which has made great strides in recent years meeting the needs of our students,” Dr. Trim said. “My goal is to build on our progress in ensuring equal educational access for all students."

Dr. Trim, a native of Guyana who emigrated with her family to Brooklyn as a child, earned her bachelor’s degree and a master’s in education from Seton Hall University, and a Doctor of Psychology degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is a certified psychologist.

In a statement, the Montclair Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) said it was “excited to learn” of the appointment: “Dr. Trim is invested in our community and the students, and we know that she will continue to collaborate with community members to ensure each student receives the support necessary to provide meaningful educational progress. SEPAC extends its sincerest congratulations.”Dr. Trim will succeed Dr. David Goldblatt, who left retirement as a former New Jersey school superintendent to serve two years as Interim Director of Pupil Services. The department oversees special education, mental health, and nursing services.

“During his time here, David led a successful restructuring and repurposing of the department. I am exceptionally thankful for his contributions and leadership,” said Ponds.

Dr. Trim will begin serving as Pupil Services Director in August.
