Montclair Public Schools joined communities across the United States in walking and rolling on Wed., Oct. 6, as part of the 25th annual national Walk & Bike to School Day, a celebration highlighting the importance of safe, active travel.
As our schools are back to in person learning for the first time in 18 months, students and their families were able to participate this year and were excited to stretch their legs, get some fresh air and talk about safer streets and the health benefits of getting moving to start the day.

“This year, perhaps more than ever, Walk to School Day is an opportunity to speak to the many different needs of communities across America,” said Nancy Pullen-Seufert, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School. “For communities that have infrastructure issues near schools, this is an opportunity to highlight those needs. For those who are participating in Walk to School Day 2021 to help bring their communities back together after more than a year of remote learning, it is an opportunity to embrace the power of safe, active trips to school – together. For those looking for a way to slow down vehicles in a school zone, Walk to School Day is a great opportunity to raise the awareness of child pedestrians and remind everyone that safer school zones are safer communities for everyone.”

"The students, staff, and parents had such a great time," said Hillside Walk team member Dee Thompson. "The Bike Walk Montclair organization was our guest speaker. They came to educate everyone on bike and street safety and inform us of new initiatives of their organization. We also had a guest dance instructor, Tiffany who owns local dance agency Beyond the Boogie. She was fantastic and those little bodies were moving!"
