Nishuane School’s Cultural Infusion Committee hosted a storytelling gathering in observance of Native American Heritage month. The committee, an arm of Nishuane’s School Action Team for Partnership (SATp), seeks to facilitate the development of deeper awareness, by staff and students, regarding various cultures.

The event, featuring Redhawk Native American artists, engaged the audience with dances, music and stories of the many Native American nations from across the country. The world champion dancers demonstrated their styles of dance and delivered descriptions of the dances’ origins and significance. Some young members shared their impressions: “I got to hear rain water in the performance.”; “I learned that cans are used to make some parts of the jingle dress.”; “I liked the dancing because a lot of people got to be in it.”; “I liked the special clothes for the dance.”

Since 1993 the Redhawk Native American Arts Council’s performing artists have been educating students and assisting corporations with their diversity awareness. The performers create programs that educate audiences about Native American history while emphasizing our culture today.
