Montclair Board of Education president Jessica de Koninck stopped by Bradford Elementary School to share her love of poetry with Ellen Cahill’s Kindergarten class, who recently finished a lesson on poetry.
“I’m a poet,” said de Koninck as she introduced herself to the students. “Sometimes poems rhyme and sometimes they don’t. Anyone can be a poet. You can write about anything you want.”
De Koninck read her own poem “Edge of the Nest,” that she wrote when her daughter (who recently had a baby of her own) was in in high school. She also read the first stanza of “Jabberwocky,” a “nonsense” poem by Lewis Carroll.
The Kindergarteners stepped up to the mic and read their creations out loud with topics ranging from pancakes to rain to spring and bubbles.
